How it's calculated

  1. Income tax uses 2026–27 resident rates, less the low income tax offset.
  2. Medicare levy is 2%, with the single low-income reduction.
  3. HELP repayment income = salary + extra repayment income. The repayment uses the 2026–27 marginal table.
  4. Take-home = salary − tax − Medicare − HELP.

Worked example

On a $90,000 salary, tax is $17,520 and Medicare is $1,800. HELP is ($90,000 − $69,528) × 15% = $3,070.80, so take-home is $67,609.20, about $2,600 a fortnight. Your employer also pays $10,800 super.

FAQ

When do I start repaying HECS/HELP in 2026–27?

When your repayment income goes over $69,528. Under the marginal system you only repay on income above that threshold (ATO).

How much HELP will I repay in 2026–27?

15c per dollar between $69,528 and $129,717. Then $9,028 plus 17c per dollar up to $186,050. Above that it's 10% of your total repayment income.

What is repayment income?

Taxable income plus reportable fringe benefits, total net investment losses, reportable super contributions and exempt foreign employment income. Use the extra field for those amounts.

Is super included in my take-home pay?

No. Employers pay super guarantee of 12% on top of your ordinary earnings in 2026–27. It goes to your fund, not your bank account.

Why does my payslip differ slightly?

Employers use ATO withholding schedules, which round per pay period. This calculator works out the annual tax liability, so your end-of-year result is what it estimates.
